This Whirlwind We Call Life

Tonight as I sit and type this late Monday night blog, I am filled up with thoughts, including how life is such a whirlwind of events, emotions, thoughts and actions. It's quite amazing really, how we toggle through each and every day, without falling asleep from pure exhaustion before it's over.

For those of you who are old enough to remember the Dunkin Donuts commercial years ago, where the little dude would come in every morning half asleep and say "time to make the donuts", life has seemed that way at times for me, does it ever feel like that for you?

(For those of you who have NO idea what this commercial reference is... just Google it! Ah the power of search engines for the young ones)

Anyway... back to where I was, life is sometimes robotic, monotonous, and simply put, boring. This is why we must CREATE some excitement into each day to keep from being bored to death. My "creations" are often looked at as CRAZY... because I do things that keep me busy... excited... but they are not necessarily what the "world" finds exciting. I set goals and go after them.

When I rewind the past 11 months of my life, I am amazed that another year has gone by... time really doesn't sit still. In fact, it moves at lightning speed right before our eyes, which is why we truly must make the best of every single day. We must be certain to do some conscious things in the midst of all the unconscious behavior.

What is your life like? Is it calm or crazy? Predictable or spontaneous? I must say, that mine had become a bit predictable as I shifted my career focus into achieving a life- long dream, and moving to a new state. I had to get into a new routine, and routine is often a necessary part of success. However, over the past several months, many changes have occurred, some challenges have reared their ugly head, causing me to suit up and fight some battles. However in the fight, I also gained some victory and all of it has led me to yet another whirlwind... an unexpected twist in my journey.

In just one short month, on the 1 year anniversary of my exciting move to Charlotte, NC, for a new beginning, I am moving back to Tampa. Not because life did not work here, it has actually been amazing, I have made some great friends and business connections that I intend to keep, and have loved my home and neighborhood. However, let's just say that a person in life challenged me and instead of fighting it I made the decision that perhaps I still have work to do in Tampa. Funny, that in the middle of what seemed to be a negative thing, positive light began to shine through.

I have heard and even experienced a "break" from something, only to pick it back up later and try it again and been incredibly successful. That is how I am choosing to look at this unexpected journey back to a place that I said goodbye to a year ago.

Although bittersweet, this move has purpose, just as the move to NC did. I stay faithful that this purpose will be revealed in bright light, so that I won't be confused as to what that purpose is. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't nervous, because I am... however each and every moment leads you to the next. So sometimes, despite your fears and uncertainty, you just have to accept it and claim it.

I am looking forward to seeing what lies ahead, I have changed a lot in one year. The growth that I have experienced as a human being... in my soul, faith and heart have made this experience SO worth while. I embrace the journey ahead, I know it will leave me with more stories to tell!

One day though, I hope to feel more settled... to live a life that is more calm, and hope I don't find that boring.  I really do close my eyes often to dream of the day when I will be sitting on my back porch, overlooking a beautiful lake in the mountains, crisp air wrapping me like a warm blanket, sipping a cup of coffee, reading a good book and thinking to myself...

"Yep, this is what I worked for. That whirlwind I call my life was worth it."

Do the Hustle...

And suddenly, I am humming one of my favorite 1970's song's and wiggling my bottom in my chair to the beat although that "hustle" is not at all what I am actually talking about. Did I mention that I LOVE to dance? (Where is the disco when you need it?) I know I have been preoccupied with life not even realizing that I missed writing two blog posts. This time it was due to the Spring season of Florida in full force. It was time for my two allergy-stricken youngest to have their yearly coughing, sneezing, itchy, watery eye issues which required staying home from school, pulling out the nebulizer, saline spray and anything else to keep it from turning into bronchitis or worse. No excuses, just truth; it is in moments like this that I am happy to be in business for myself so I can stay home and care for them even if it means sitting them in my lap while I work.

As I was  trying to find inspiration for my post tonight with a "fried egg" mind from after a long day at the office, I asked a friend whom I was texting with to give me an idea... no pressure at all. HAHA Luckily a good one came to mind and I am running with it.

So here was his thought...

"People can be smarter, faster, stronger, or whatever... you cannot control that. But don't let anyone outwork you; don't be out hustled."

How PERFECT of a topic for someone like me... the single mom of 4- author- speaker- blogger-adviser-coach- mentor- makeup artist- madwoman "hustling" entrepreneur. I must say my "hustling" began at an early age and ultimately led me to make the educated decision never to work for anyone as long as I could help it. I did not want to be on "that" side of the equation. (I would likely be fired for over achieving and too much overtime pay.) Being an employee from the age of 13 through the age of 19  taught me one thing.... I AM NOT a good employee at ALL. (Unless you want me to run your company, then I am awesome and EXTREMELY cooperative.)

The biggest question that came to mind when my friend sent me this was, "Are you born a hustler or can you be taught how to hustle?"  I would like to think that a person can learn these skills by reading books, self improving, learning good work ethic and finding a career (or in my case careers) they love. However, when I think of how many people think I am totally off my rocker doing all that I do, I ponder... maybe it IS something that some people just "have" or not. I know that as I have and continue to develop leaders, I have always been able to bring out the best in others, I have experienced how the human mind can be shaped and formed into something it never was or even dreamed to be; even I am still amazed at how it happens sometimes.

Lately I have been on a roll in this department and have had such an overwhelming out pour of email messages and Facebook tags telling how much I have changed people's lives.... it is still surreal  to me. ME??? Changing lives?? ME? That girl who was lost for so long falling over my wrinkles of mistakes and mountains of bad decisions? WOW... truly humbling for me I must say. No wonder God allowed me to fall on my face so many times; He had to do something with this stubborn brat.

I have certainly implemented several positive changes within this last year due to mistakes yet again that I made; nobody is perfect, but you can certainly strive for perfection. It has been another year of growth through lessons and change through actions no matter how scary or risky so that I can make a difference in my life once again. I am Going After the Happy Ending" just as my upcoming book is titled and I KNOW it's out there for me in every facet of my life. I have never been so excited to finish a puzzle before... to fill in the gaps and link all the missing pieces together to create that beautiful picture.

I must admit, now that I am back on the right track, putting God as my numero uno He is letting me know I am in His will by showering me with grace and opening doors in every direction, proving once again that He is always there for his children no matter how astray we may get. With all the positive happening right now, He must be a proud papa.

Hustling has become my way of life... so as long as I am smiling and changing lives, I will keep it up and keep it real. I mean seriously... God was a hustler; that amazing dude created the world in 6 days... he makes me look like a sluggard! I want to be JUST LIKE HIM, or at least die trying.  I am blessed and continue to be blessed in this life and know that abundance awaits those of us who "hustle" as we were meant to use every single gift we were given in a way that speaks life.

"Lazy people are soon poor; hard workers get rich." Proverbs 10:4

Until next time... HUSTLE

Another August 5th.... The day that changed my life forever

As I prepared myself for tonight's blog, I sighed... and actually smiled because another year has passed and here I sit writing a blog on the eve of August 5th... the day my sister died 33 years ago, the day I wrote my very first journal entry 29 years ago which later became the beginning of the first chapter in my book, the night in 2010 that I ironically typed the last word of the first draft of that book which was dedicated to my sister, and the day in 2012 that I was scheduled to release the book and did not meet the deadline. It was because of not meeting this deadline that I was reconnected with my sister's best friend; one of the last people to see her alive after her friend's husband saw my tribute blog post that day and emailed me. I would say that this day has become more than significant in my life wouldn't you agree?

Many things have happened on this day now that can make me smile; a day that was once filled with sadness, grief and horrible memories is now a day with new meaning; all in the memory of my beautiful sister Teresa.  Oh how I hope that she can see me from heaven, that she is somehow helping control what's going on down here... ya know, looking out for me. I know that she would be so proud of what I have created through the most devastating things that ever happened to me. How I wish so badly that she were here, I would have loved to know what it was like having a big sister in my adult life... as I had children and went through life struggles she would have likely been the one I would  have called when I needed a shoulder; I guess that is why God made my mother so awesome... he knew I would need her.

I need something else significant to happen today to keep up the trend; I have a few things planned to help make that happen. Every year on this day, my word of choice is "SIGNIFICANCE"... What can I do to make today significant, meaningful and on purpose? The answer is we can ALWAYS do SOMETHING to make the day significant and I want all of you to remember that. You can make it significantly bad or significantly good... the choice is yours and your actions will define how that story ends.

I honestly cannot write a long post tonight... I am already swallowed up in tears after writing these few short paragraphs... and me, yes, me... the girl who is FULL of things to say has also learned that sometimes saying less is more and keeping it short can be VERY sweet. My message to you is that know that every single moment has purpose... meaning and significance, so spend them wisely, live them with love, hope and meaning but most of all, cherish every single one; we never know when tomorrow will be taken away.

To my sister Teresa up above....

I miss you dearly, not only today, but every single day that goes by. I must admit, that I am kinda jealous that you are up there hangin' with God, I know he is awesome. Watch out for me down here, okay? I feel your presence in me when I write... you loved to write and even planned to be a journalist; I often feel that your voice lives within me. As far as I am concerned, we write together... it is because of you that I first wrote in a journal and it will be why I write books and blog posts forever. Thank God for me, he provided the "why" that I needed in what was once a very lonely, dark and angry place for me. His light shines through me brightly now and my hope is to continue to change and influence the lives of others in a positive way just as He did. You still have meaning Teresa, you are my purpose and together, we have become significant.

XOXO
Your lil' sis,
~SHELLS~
