If I Were More Like Most....

Hello blog... hello friends, I have missed you. It's been two crazy weeks! Between my busy schedule and life happening, I had to forfeit blogging. With the warm Florida sun comes seasonal allergies and having two seasonal asthmatic kids, a season change means flare ups. As a result, Abrielle ended up in the hospital last week with double pneumonia... (which by the way was also the last week of school)  It was triggered by her allergies and an odd string of the flu. I felt so blessed and fortunate to be able to be there by her side the entire time. I knew I could pick back up where I left off when things calmed down. I continued to post on all my social media pages and sites so you would not be left without, so hopefully you follow me there too. I'm always sad when I cannot deliver on my commitments, but it happens to us all and we simply must prioritize.

After an exhausting week, I sat down and watched a movie tonight... one that turned out to be incredible! Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close truly exceeded my expectations! Then, of course, it inspired me with a thought provoking blog topic. I related to the young boy in the movie so much, he was searching for answers... for hope, that maybe his father left him something... a clue to what happened and why. I got so choked up as he practically went crazy on this search to find what he hoped would give him peace. Although I am not sure how old the boy was in the movie... I remembered me as that young little girl who lost her sister and everything she knew and then reflected on how my life unfolded afterwards. It really was an incredible movie for so many reasons; if you have not seen it, I highly recommend it!

Life is really short, you must truly hold onto every awesome moment, every meaningful word, gesture, or person that comes into your life. Cherish what you have and never stop going after what you want in life. Hug your kids, your spouse, your parents, your siblings, your friends, and tell them how much you love them EVERY DAY even if it's in a text or on Facebook. We are never promised tomorrow and as cliche as that may sound after hearing it SOOO many times, we still need the reminder that we are not invincible, we are not here forever and we need to be conscious of what we will leave behind when we are gone.

You can never truthfully say that one person cannot make such a significant difference with their words and actions that they will be remembered for years and years after their death. Too many people have come and gone in this world who have spent their whole lives using the gifts that they were given to inspire, impress a message or feeling upon others to help them. Many and most were shunned, made fun of, ridiculed and called strange only to be celebrated and quoted for years after their death; at some point the ridicule lessens and they prove to be an inspiration to others.

We never forget the extraordinary ones, the ones that never gave up, the ones that were consistently "different", the square pegs, the misfits, the ones that discovered their purpose, their passions and did everything they could to share with others what they have learned along their long and windy path. You see... without people that are willing to do what you are not willing to do, you would never know the meaning of significance.

So I ask you today... how significant are you? Are you willing to do what others won't in order to make a difference? Are you hopeful that you can change peoples lives in a positive way or are you the one who wants to sit on the sidelines quietly? Are you willing to stand up for what you believe in or take a stand for what you are passionate about?

I am, and all of you have it in you to do the same. It may not be something that will yield you a huge income... but it CAN be significant and you CAN make a difference in someone's life no matter how uninspiring you feel. When I sat down to write my book, I did not "feel" inspiring... I felt deflated, depleted, lost and defeated. Ironically being in that spot allowed me to be vulnerable and to just pour out my heart and be REAL with people, to be raw and full of emotion and it ended up being the very reason it has inspired so many people now. Humility became my lesson and with that lesson came the biggest growth spurt and peacefulness I had ever had and it is awesome. It was not about me anymore, it was not about MY success or MY winning the prize or proving something to the world about me; it became about what I could do for others. It became about making people laugh, smile, cry, think, or change. My life shifted at that moment and has been in high gear ever since.

If I were more like most, I would be ordinary, I would be unwilling to do more, sacrifice more, and seek more in order to have more; not more things... not more money, but simply more impact. For me, being like most is not an option, I choose to be as significant as I can be, as extraordinary as I was meant to become and to use every single gift and form of knowledge that I have gained to better the lives of others. I hope that no matter how insignificant you may feel , that you realize that you have gifts to share; experiences that would inspire others. I DARE you to discover them, to use them,  and to be humbled by them.

I hope you have a WONDERFUL week...
xoxo

Starting Your Week off Right Part 1

BLAH BLAH BLAH... YES! It's MONDAY and if you keep up that moaning your week will be off to a great start won't it? EXACTLY, so stop the complaining now and be thankful you woke up, have a job, have kids to get ready for school, can brew coffee and all the rest of the things that are really good about today. It gets redundant when every single Monday, Facebook lights up with moaner's and woe is me-er's, it's really depressing which is why I eventually customized my news feed to only see what my positive friend's post. (Same reason I don't watch the news, television or read trash mags.) I know, I am weird but from where I am standing weird looks pretty good in comparison, so I will stay right where I am in my own little world. When things get gray in here, I read a book, talk to a friend or write a blog post and miraculously I get out of my funk and press on.

Now... go look in the mirror,
SMILE, WINK
and say
GOOD MORNING YOU SEXY BEAST!
(GO DO IT ... NO KIDDING)

Hopefully you did it and hopefully it made you feel silly or ridiculous;
because both of those things will help lift your mood.
If you didn't do it then do it after you finish reading will ya? I can't help if you won't play along!

So.... this week is a BUSY week for me. (surprise surprise) I have hair clients, photo shoots, paperwork, pumpkin carving with my kids, people to make pretty for Halloween, neighborhood trick or treating and my daughter's 12th birthday party on Saturday. I hope to squeeze in some writing time and a little rest in there too. However what I am MOST excited about is how I am starting my week off on this awesome Monday. Tonight, I am participating in a night of giving to those in need at the 3rd annual BICF (Believe in Christ Foundation) Meet n-Greet instead of Trick Or Treat along with singer-songwriter Brandee Nielson, her husband Ralph and many others who are donating their time to make a difference in the lives of others. This will be my first year being involved in this particular event so I am not quite sure what to expect, but what I do know is that every time I have the opportunity to give of myself to those in need, I do, and I always unexpectedly walk away with more than what I gave; it's so cool!  I have found that the easiest way for me to get in the mood for the holiday's is to do something for those who have less than me...this was especially true when I barley had enough money to buy for my own family. It truly put into perspective how blessed I was to have the life that I did, even when I did not think my life was anything that anyone else would want.

I am going to keep this short because I will be writing more about my experience either tonight or tomorrow and  posting some pictures along with, but do me a favor okay? Start this Monday off right. Say a proper good morning to yourself and your family, be thankful for the life that you have, set goals and take action in order to live the life that you want and then go out and do something or say something nice to a stranger, I guarantee it will help you have an amazing week! Ciao! See you again soon!

I Bought Him a Coke and Got a Smile

Yesterday ranked in my top 10 of all days; it was a day that left me with a cement smile and a wonderfully euphoric high even after only having 3 hours of sleep the night before. It began with 4 wonderfully creative hours with Randy Van Duinen and Lee Burgess, two of my photographer clients and Martin Gudz, President of the Florida Professional Photographers Association. It was an incredible day of photography magic and a ton of fun that ended with Martin being so impressed with my talents that he asked me to speak at next years photography convention. I was blown away and incredibly honored as I accepted the invitation.

When I arrived home, I kissed my kiddos and sat down to check my email. I received a message in my inbox that I had been waiting for. It revealed GREAT news about the new book which I am currently writing for photographers. This email was the game-changer of a lifetime and quite frankly... I can hardly believe it. Needless to say, the smiles and happy emotions were swirling around inside of me so strongly that it was beaming through my chest like a beacon in the night.

I quickly packed for a weekend trip to Orlando and left the house in terrific spirits. Little did I know that my quick stop at the bank would allow me to pass this feeling of joy on to someone in need, but it did. As I was waiting in the line for the drive up ATM to make my weekly after-hours deposit, I heard a man screaming angrily but could not see where it was coming from. As I turned my head around to see if I could figure it out I saw a disheveled young man... probably in his twenties frantically roaming the parking lot of the Walgreen's next door. He was randomly going up to people and as words were exchanged he would walk away shouting as he ran his hands through his sweaty hair. My initial thought was that he must be mentally disturbed and perhaps dangerous as I am sure many would have thought, but as I sat there listening to my favorite Christian radio station.. my thoughts quickly changed. After completing my transaction at the ATM, I drove towards this young man, now sitting with his head in his hands on the curb. I stopped, rolled down my window and asked if he was okay. He said, "Ma'am, I am just so hungry.... I have not had anything to eat in 3 days, and I have nowhere to stay." He was sweating profusely, as the heat outside was tremendous. I said... "I can't give you a place to stay, but what would you like to eat?" He smiled and said, if you could just get me a Coke... that would be great. I told him I would be right back.

I walked into Walgreen's and grabbed a Coke... then loaded up on various hearty snacks packed with protein such as nuts granola bars and checked out getting $10 cash back at the register. With a smile, I walked out of the store and walked right up to the young man as I said... "Nobody should go hungry, here are some snacks for you and also $10 for dinner, DON'T buy alcohol or drugs with this money do you hear me?" A smile came upon his face and a tear came to his eye as he said "Ma'am, thank you SO much, and don't worry, I will buy dinner, I promise." I looked him right in the eyes, smiled and said "you better not" and walked back to my car. A beautiful African American lady that witnessed my kind gesture looked at me as I got into my car and said... "May God bless you lady." I said back to her... "Thank you... He already has." When I looked in my rear view mirror, that young man was devouring what I bought him; and I was left with a whole new meaning to the phrase  Have a Coke and a Smile.

This is what I want you to take away....

We have become a society that turns our back on our own people, I wonder how many people turned this guy down thinking what I had initially thought. My earlier years of struggle has not only changed who I am, it changed how I look at things and the situations of others. Maybe this guy was crazy... but if I don't eat for 8 hours I turn into a nut myself. 3 days without food? Can you EVEN imagine? I ask that you stop judging situations with a fearful eye; start looking at them with empathy and compassion and perhaps put yourself in that situation. My euphoria continued as I drove to Orlando and I felt something amazing stirring inside of me, I want you to feel that feeling too someday!

Have a GREAT weekend! It's time for me to make a bride and her maids beautiful!!!

Doing What's Right....

First of all I want to say that I am sorry for skipping out on  my weekend blog... I had SO much to do as I got ready for a ten day business trip and by the end of Friday my brain was fried... it was worse on Saturday and Sunday it was burnt toast. I am honestly exhausted now too. I have been in a plane all day minus one stop in Houston where I had an unexpected 2 hour delay (which I took FULL advantage of) However, now that I am in San Jose in my cozy room at my friend Shellie's house, I figured I would write this quick Monday blog to start your week off  regardless of the fact that I am on a 3-hour time difference and should TOTALLY be in bed right now. Something pretty great happened to me today and even though I shared the story on my Facebook page  <

As always, just another day in the life of Shells was not just an ordinary day...

Scene: I was at the Tampa airport this morning in a ridonkulous line at security... an over 60 lady traveling with her grandson looking disheveled is frantic on the verge of tears because she may miss her flight. She expresses her concern to a TSA associate and she gets a rude reply, "get in line." As she stands there with a blank look, physically upset, some people around her are rolling their eyes, some are staying quiet and some you can hear whispering that they feel bad for her. After about 20 minutes later, I get within ear reach of the TSA guy checking boarding passes and id's and ask if I can let her cut in line ahead of me and about 30 other people. He says "if you ask everyone and they say okay" So I yell out  "does anyone care if I let this lady cut in line so she doesn't miss her flight? Does anyone care?" Nobody speaks so I allow her through and people ahead of me follow my lead, she caught her flight. Several people applauded me and the TSA guy said that was the kindest thing he had ever seen. It honestly made my day. ‪

As I sat at my gate with plenty of time to kill, I reflected on what had just happened and wondered why nobody spoke up before me. I know I was not the only one who felt the way I was feeling. She looked at me with the saddest most confused eyes I think I had ever seen after I made eye contact with her and asked, "are you going to miss your flight?" Might I add that she was not close to me in line at all. I just had to do something and quite frankly, I don't know how nobody else didn't. Have we gotten so selfish, so caught up in our own pursuit of happiness and fulfillment that we have truly forgotten what it is like to do something nice, something selfless for someone else? Are we honestly so self righteous and judgemental that we have to turn our heads and cover our ears or simply be rude to people when they are in need? C'mon people, can't you see how messed up that is? What if YOU were the one in need?

As you continue your week I ask one favor of you... do something selfless for a complete stranger and watch how good it makes you feel. Get caught doing something good for someone else and you may just find that happiness inside that you keep trying to find by buying things and having a "someone" in your life. You find peace through others.... not with others. The pursuit of  true happiness ends with making who YOU are inside better.
